Stars and Stripes...Festive Food for the Fourth

The Fourth of July is always about food, friends, and family at our house. We have celebrated for more years than I can count with the same group of folks (except when one or the other of us just happens to be out of town). Our get togethers are always casual affairs with each of the women bringing a few of her favorite dishes. Thus the meal usually shakes out as more of a pot-luck than a party that is planned and executed to perfection. However, the food is always delicious and the company delightful!
This year I am bringing my favorite marinated tomato, onion, and cucumber salad with fresh dill and fresh basil, bacon baked beans, and corn on the cob (we'll just throw it on the grill so no real prep necessary except for the shuckin').  I'll also come up with some sort of appetizer and maybe add a pick-up dessert.
If you are lacking inspiration for table settings or food to share, check out some of these great ideas!

I love the idea of a patriotic cake. And this one works well for a larger crew.
Leave the cake pop sticks off (it's safer for little ones) and let folks help themselves!

This patriotic pie features a yummy crust made of sugar cookie dough (store-bought, of course!); followed by a layer of low-fat cream cheese mixed with low-fat Cool Whip;
then topped with a wonderful "flag" of bananas, blueberries and strawberries.
Finish with a glaze of cornstarch, orange juice and sugar to keep the bananas from turning brown.
So much fun!

These strawberries are showing off their colors.
Dip them in yogurt and finish them with turbinado sugar that has been colored blue!

And speaking of yogurt, this is a fun not-too-sweet dessert alternative
These yogurt pops look yummy and healthy too! Made using three different kinds of yogurt- strawberry, vanilla, and blueberry. Add food coloring to the yogurts to make the colors more vibrant or actual blueberries and strawberries for a bigger taste!

And this layered dessert trifle makes use of pound cake cut in the shape of stars.
Love it!
The stars are just from a Sara Lee pound cake and a cookie cutter...so simple and festive..
Finally, this unusual red, white, and blue salsa puts a different spin on the traditional flavor profile.

Every Southern woman worth her salt has a stash of mason jars.
Why not pull them out, add some festive paper straws, and a little grosgrain ribbon?
Voila! You have the perfect festive accent to your celebration!

Fourth of July Drinks from a country mason jar

And you don't just have to drink out of the mason jars!
They make a great container for utensils.
No wrapping or tying here...just drop the bandana aka napkin in the mason jar and add the silverware!
Mason jars + bandannas= easy picnic cutlery fare.
And for a vintage touch, take a tea-stained flag and secure it to a mason jar with twine.
Drop your flickering votive inside. Easy peasy and so sweet!

And we all know that life goes a little better with chocolate...
This treat is so simple, but oh so good!
To make it a special snack for the Fourth of July, add blueberries to the centers of the raspberries
(but keep the white chocolate, of course)!

I've featured this recipe before, but couldn't resist using it again.
Chocolate, strawberry nachos anyone?

Stay cool with this treat: Frozen Bottle Rockets!
Shooters
Use 1 bottle of blue soda, 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream, and 1 cup of raspberry sorbet.
Put some sorbet and ice cream in each glass.
Pour the blue soda over the ice cream and serve immediately!

And here's to the sacrifice and service of those past, present, and future
who continue to make this the Land of the Free
and the Home of the Brave

The Sweetest Southern Shower

   Ahhh love, sweet love.
The joy between a man and his maid is always to be celebrated.
And we Southerners do Bridal Showers with such graciousness, style, and panache.
Creating a beautiful environment in which to fete the Bride is expected.
Having made that clear, I want to go on record saying that this Bridal Shower has to be
one of the prettiest parties I have ever seen.
Take a look and decide for yourself...
Layers and layers of lovelies....
Linens. Lace. Antique china. Silver.
Everywhere you turned, there were special touches

Little cards where you could write your dreams and desires for the bride and groom.
Tables were laden with lovely food and adorned with beautiful flowers

Tiny cookies in the shape of engagement rings paired with
iced wedding dresses and the palest of pink hearts

A cake to die for

A joy-filled day to celebrate the sweet love between a very special Bride and Groom,
this lovely party is one to long remember...

Sip and See for Little Three

If you are from the South, you have quite possibly heard of a "Sip and See."  This long-standing mostly Southern tradition has morphed into something with a different twist in modern times. In my day, the Sip and See was held in the home of the Bride in the weeks before the wedding so that folks could come and view the wedding gifts in advance of the big day. Now, you most often receive an invitation to a Sip and See to meet a newly arrived little person.
Some dear friends of ours did just that for Little Three. Friends and family recently gathered on a delightful Sunday afternoon with warm sunshine and a definite hint of fall in the air. To say that the  hostess has a beautiful house is an understatement. Her home is literally layered with beauty. Her taste combines a few contemporary touches with more traditional in a delightful eclectic way that serves to make folks feel right at home. It is lovely but not pretentious. You feel the warmth and the comfort the minute you step in the door. As my daughter-in-law said, "I could just pack a toothbrush and move in."
The hostesses wisely kept the party simple. Champagne in the cutest little containers you have ever seen. Tiny baby-sized cupcakes from Nashville's vaunted Cupcake Collection. Traditional lemonade and pink lemonade along with coffee, and tea. Perfect. Lovely. Delightful. Need I say more?

And here's the little man doing what he does best...sleeping through it all.
It will be a gift that will serve him well in life!

Cupcakes Anyone?!

Martha was on the bandwagon long before anyone else knew that there was about to be a national cupcake explosion. Now we have Cupcake Wars and cupcake stores on nearly every corner (at least in Nashville, that's the case!) Long a favorite for the birthday party crowd, cupcakes are now being served at weddings, business meetings, and other more formal occasions.
